Georgia Firefighters Work Simultaneous Extrications At Multi Car Crash
November 16, 2006

Georgia - Wednesday, November 15,2006 - 10:30 am - Ringgold/Catoosa County Fire Department was dispatched with Hutcheson and Angels EMS to a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 75 Northbound around the 351 mile marker. When Catoosa Battalion 4 arrived on the scene, he reported multiple vehicles with multiple injuries and entrapment. Battalion 4 also reported a semi straight truck overturned on its side. Catoosa County Sheriff’s Officers immediately shut down all of the northbound lanes of traffic for the safety of the emergency workers as well as for the large amount of debris in the roadway.

Within seconds, Hutcheson EMS and Catoosa County Rescue 1 arrived on the scene. Paramedics quickly started assessing the injuries while firefighters set up to start extrication on the two vehicles. Catoosa Engine 13 and additional medic units with Angels EMS arrived on scene quickly and assisted with rescue operations. Firefighters were faced with a rather difficult task as they had to set up two extrication operations on the same scene. One person was trapped inside a white Ford Taurus while another person was trapped inside a black BMW. Both of the trapped patients were in serious condition. Paramedics started treating both patients while firefighters started extricating.

Firefighters had to remove two doors and a post with hydraulic cutters and spreaders to access the patient in the white Taurus. While this operation was in progress, rescuers also had to use extreme care due to the positioning of the patient inside of the wreckage. Crews were able to free that patient fairly quickly and immediately packaged and loaded her into an ambulance. The other extrication on the BMW was also just as complex as firefighters had to remove the roof and a door. After removing the roof, rescuers were able to load the patient out of the car and onto a backboard. That patient was also loaded into an ambulance.

Both of the trapped patients were transported to Erlanger Medical Center after being extricated. Two other people that were also in the white Taurus received only minor injuries and refused to be transported. The driver of the overturned truck also had minor injuries and he also refused to be transported to the hospital. Witnesses at the scene said the heavy rain and wet roads may have been a large contributing factor in the crash. Georgia State Patrol Officers are investigating the crash.
